DryersFound in about 80% of Americans' homes, clothes dryers are quite simple mechanically among household appliances. Your dryer has three basic components – a tumbler, a heater, and an exhaust vent. A dryer works by tumbling your clothes around and heating the air in the spaces between them. The heat dries the clothes, and the exhaust vent lets the hot air out of the house. Dryer heat is generated either by gas or electricity. One thing to keep in mind is that dryers are one of the most expensive appliances running in your home, so it's important to make sure your dryer is running as efficiently as possible. In addition, it's critical to remember to always clean the lint catcher before and after each load and also to periodically check the vents behind the dryer for lint. Problems with dryers usually stem from problems with either the heating device or the tumbler. However, undue wear and tear on and even failure of bearings, ignitors, or other crucial components can also occur when the exhaust pipe is not properly maintained and kept clear of debris. To reduce risk of fire and keep energy efficiency high, it is also critical that these exhaust pipes be made of the proper material.
