Garbage DisposalsGarbage disposals are among the handiest household appliances, but also perhaps one of the ones we become most frustrated with. They attach to the underside of your sink, grinding up food particles and washing them away through the drain, usually with the flip of an electric switch. Since the food gets liquefied and run through the drain system, you must run cold water during and a little after an electric disposal's operation. Some food items that it's important to remember never to put down the disposal are rice, celery, eggshells, coffee grinds, and potatoes. Even with proper usage, however, garbage disposals often require a little repair here and there. Many of the problems that arise can be fixed by pressing the reset button or otherwise freeing the flywheel. There may be some problems that you can't fix yourself, but this doesn't always mean you need to buy a whole new unit. Garbage disposals are pretty basic and newer models really don't have any important new features. Here are the answers to some common problems that cannot be fixed by homeowners themselves: If the disposal won't turn on or off, you could need a new switch. If your disposal drains slowly, it may not be grinding well enough, indicating that the shredder needs replacement. A leaky unit could suggest that the gasket needs to be replaced.
