Trash CompactorsTrash compactors are quite convenient for home owners and also provide environmental benefits by helping with landfill problems. Trash compactors are fairly simple appliances constructed of a few basic components: a drawer, a compression ram, drive screws, and various switches. A motor, of course, runs the entire thing. Simply put, the compression ram travels up and down by means of nuts that are connected to it and the drive screws. Limit switches control how far down the ram goes and directs it to travel upward after compacting. If trash rather than the limit switch causes the ram to stop, that also triggers the ram to return to its upward resting position. Some compactors are also equipped with some method of odor control. Compactors often present problems that, rather than indicating that they are permanently broken, only suggest that routine maintenance or component replacement is in order. For instance, the compactor may be difficult to open or may not open at all. Or maybe the compactor won't start or doesn't compact anything. These are common problems that a trained technician can readily resolve.
